When Grief Doesn’t Make Sense

by April Forella, LMHC – Palm City, FL

Welcome to The Nourished Soul, a space dedicated to high-achieving women who are navigating the complex journey of healing from anxiety, grief/loss and trauma (present or past). This blog is your sanctuary—a place where we explore ways to reclaim your peace, rediscover your strength, and nourish your soul so you can thrive not just in your accomplishments, but in your heart and mind too.

This blog is dedicated to all the women that have experienced the deep pain of grief. Grief is a deeply personal journey that touches us all, often arriving uninvited and reshaping the way we see the world.

Grief doesn’t follow a schedule.
It doesn’t care about how “strong” you are, how busy your calendar is, or how many other people are counting on you.

It comes in waves. It lingers in quiet moments.
And sometimes, it shows up months—or even years—after a loss you thought you’d already processed.

My own journey with grief has been deeply personal. Over the course of eight years, I lost several close family members—each passing leaving a unique ache, and each wave of grief hitting differently. Some losses were expected, others sudden. What I didn’t expect was how layered and long-lasting grief could be. It wasn’t just sadness—it was exhaustion, disorientation, and moments of guilt for still carrying the pain. As a therapist, the experience of the grief and pain changed the way I hold space for my clients. I don’t rush grief. I sit with it, honor it, and help women make room for healing—no matter how long it takes or how messy it feels.

Grief and Loss therapy in Palm City, Florida

As a therapist working with high-achieving women, I’ve noticed a pattern:
We’re often amazing at doing—checking boxes, pushing through, staying productive. But when it comes to grief?
We feel lost, overwhelmed, or even ashamed for “still” feeling sad.

Maybe your grief looks like:

  • Holding it together all day, then crying in the car on the way home

  • Avoiding certain places, songs, or memories because they feel like too much

  • Wondering if you’re “doing it wrong” because it’s been a while, and the pain still shows up

  • Feeling numb when you think you should be feeling more

Or maybe you’re grieving something that doesn’t even look like a traditional loss.

Because grief doesn’t only happen when someone dies.

You might be grieving:

  • A friendship that ended without closure

  • The version of yourself before a trauma or diagnosis

  • The family you wished you had growing up

  • A life path you thought you’d be on by now

  • A child you hoped to have, but don’t

Grief is not one-size-fits-all.
It’s not linear.
And it’s not something you “get over.”

But it is something you can move through—with support, compassion, and space to feel the full truth of it.

Even in the depths of my grief, my faith in God has been a steady anchor. I don’t pretend it took the pain away—but it gave me a deeper sense of comfort and hope. In the quiet moments when the loss felt unbearable, I held onto the promise that this life isn’t the end of the story. The hope of heaven with the Lord—that I’ll see my loved ones again—has been a light in the darkest valleys. It’s a hope that reminds me love never truly dies, and that even in sorrow, God is near, gently holding every tear. I find comfort in the word of God “Psalm 34:18 “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

Healing Through Grief with EMDR

EMDR therapy isn’t just for trauma—it can be a powerful tool in processing grief.
It helps the brain and body make sense of the loss, integrate the pain, and gently release what’s keeping you stuck in it.

Grief may always be part of your story. But it doesn’t have to define your every day.

You deserve to feel joy again. You deserve to exhale.

If you're holding grief and not sure what to do with it...

I’d be honored to hold that space with you.

I offer EMDR therapy for high-achieving women in Palm City and surrounding areas who are ready to gently process what hurts—and begin healing forward.
